Overview
The Ethiopian Protection Authority (ERPA) is established by Law since December 1993 - with the proclamation of the Radiation Protection Proclamation No. 79/1993 and by the revised new Proclamation No. 571/2008. The Authority is a competent Government body that control and regulate the import, export, use, transport, dispose of, etc any source of radiation. Moreover, anyone who intends to practice any activities using radiation sources need to notify the Authority earlier and shall get a license to practice. During notification the Authority provides specific regulatory control requirements required for the type of application. ERPA Profile the Ethiopian Radiation Protection Authority (ERPA) is located behind Churchill Road and Lycee G/Mariam School. ERPA has organized as total staff of 140 of which 42 technical staff. The Authority is one of the institutions organized under the Science & Technology Ministry and structured into two main Core Processes, NAD & IED and other Support Services. Under the Inspection & Enforcement Directorate (IED), a medium level of Food & Environmental Laboratory equipped with gamma-spectrometer system, radon monitoring and other portable radiation measuring devices are available. In addition, the construction of a National Radioactive Waste Management Center is under completion phase; which has a capability to condition low level radioactive waste (LLRW) and to store them until approved disposal.

To protect individuals, the society, its property and the environment in current and future generations, from Radiation hazards; To carry out or promote study and research on issues that could support Radiation Protection activities.

To create a favorable condition for the contribution of radiation and nuclear technology towards accelerating sustainable national development, without causing undue burden to future generation of Ethiopia and by protecting People, Property and the Environment against the risk of damage from radiation, through strengthening and implementing an efficient Radiation Protection and Regulatory Infrastructure.
