Overview
Awash Valley's fertile plain is blessed with ideal soil and weather for the growing of grapes. This perfect territory means that we harvest twice a year.
History
Established in 1956, Awash Wines is Ethiopia’s longest established wine maker. Since that time we have grown to be one of the country's most loved brands - a market leader that is interwoven with the cultural fabric of the country.
In September 2013, 8 Miles LLP, a private equity fund focused on African development, and Mulugeta Tesfakiros, a local entrepreneur, became our owners. Since then, significant investments have been made to upgrade facilities and further improve quality.
Our Vision
Our vision is to continue to delight our Ethiopian customers with our wines, introduce new exciting products for their pleasure, and eventually to bring Ethiopian wine to the attention of the world.
Our Assets
The Upper Awash Valley is situated 180km south-east of Addis Ababa. A fertile plain blessed with ideal soil and weather for the growing of grapes.
This is where you’ll find our vineyard in Merti Jeju. From this idyllic location, the grape harvest is brought to our two wineries, Lideta and Mekanisa, where we make our current range of eight excellent table wines.
Our Product
- 1. Awash Wine
- Awash, which carries the name of the company itself, is our best selling white wine. A semi-bodied, golden colored wine mingles light citrus flavors with kiwi and melon to produce a lovely, refreshing taste. This wine is perfect to share with friends and family on a hot afternoon or to serve with light meals or snacks.
- 2. Gouder Wine
- This red gets its name from one of the regions where our grapes were originally planted, and is our most popular red wine. A dry, deeply crimson wine pairs mocha aromas with essences of cranberry and chocolate to create a complex and satisfying wine experience. This wine is great with Kitfo or as an everyday after-work aperitif.
- 3. Axumit Wine
- Axumit, named after one of Ethiopia’s most revered historic sites, is one of our oldest and most famous wines. A full-bodied red that combines hints of cherries and nutmeg with a delightful sweetness, this wine is perfect for any celebration, whether it’s Meskel or just the end of a long work week.
- 4. Kemila Wine
- Kemila, which means beautiful in the language of the Wollo, is our white wine. A sensual semi-sweet base is perfectly complemented by essences of buttery vanilla and almonds. This wine can be served with fish or pasta or imbibed on its own for white wine enthusiasts.
Our People
Our success can be attributed to many factors such as the excellent soil and ideal weather that nurtures our grapes. However, the single most important element is our people.
It is their expertise, knowledge, care and energy that makes awash what it is today - the wine of choice in Ethiopia.
In return, we give our people the opportunity to realize their potential through training and education. We wish to empower all our employees to use their initiative for their own betterment and that of the company.
We strive to improve the lives and community of our people.
